Final Project
August 2025
The finished version of Mental Forest is a hand-painted board game designed to normalize conversations about mental health. Players journey through a colorful forest, collecting key fragments while facing challenges, drawing boost cards, and using Helping Hand cards to support one another.
The design balances playfulness with depth. The board is bright and approachable, deliberately avoiding sterile or clinical aesthetics, while the mechanics mirror the ups and downs of mental health — unpredictability, setbacks, progress, and support. The addition of thermochromatic squares adds a tactile element of surprise, symbolizing how hidden struggles or strengths can surface under different conditions.
What makes the final game distinctive is the balance it holds: players can experience challenge without being overwhelmed, and they can rely on each other through cooperative mechanics. It is not a game about winning or losing, but about journeying together — an echo of real conversations about mental health.
The final prototype feels complete, but it is also a beginning. While this version was created as part of my master’s project, I hope to continue developing Mental Forest further, with the possibility of wider play testing, community workshops, and even future production.
